Odana Rice Recipe

Ayurvedic rice
  • Buy locally grown organic ingredients, if possible

    • 1 cup white rice, raw

    • 5 cups water, room temperature

    • Roasted cumin seeds

  • Odana rice serves as a source of energy for the body. Especially when consumed during the colder months, it can provide warmth and balance Vata dosha. Additionally, when paired with mung dal, it forms a harmonious balance of the six tastes, promoting good digestion and supporting overall health.

  • While Odana is a universal food, it might not be suitable for everyone, especially in excess. Those with a predominant Kapha constitution or suffering from Kapha-related ailments like congestion, obesity, and lethargy, should consume Odana in moderation. As always, individual digestive capacity and current state of health should dictate dietary choices.

Recipe Serves 3-4

Directions:

  1. Preparation: Wash the rice thoroughly and soak it for 2 hours. After soaking, drain the excess water.

  2. Sautéing the Rice: Place your pot on medium heat. Add the soaked rice and sauté briefly for 2 minutes.

  3. Cooking the Rice: Pour in the water. Give it a gentle stir to make sure none of the rice sticks to the bottom. Bring the mix to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, letting it simmer without a lid for 30-40 minutes.

  4. Skimming the Foam: As the water heats and starts boiling, you'll notice a white foam forming on the surface. Skim this off using a spoon and dispose of it.

  5. Serving: Once the rice is cooked to your liking, turn off the heat. Allow it to rest for about 10 minutes. Drain off any leftover water. Garnish with roasted cumin before serving.
